Gnowsis End User Installation

This guide will help you to get a happy Gnowsis user in only five steps. It won't take you longer than 5min.

Step 1: Start Gnowsis

A nice little welcome-screen will pop up.



click next > to continue

Step 2: A guide through the guide

Now you have to enter your Name, E-mail address and Jabber ID



click next > to continue
The information generated from your previous entered data is shown to you.



click next > to continue



This window asks you for permission to log some data for scientific research. It is used to make a evaluation on how the gnowsis Semantic Desktop is used by the people out there. As a matter of course all the data is kept private. We please you to take part on the evaluation and allow us to improve the research based on the data collected from the Gnowsis users. Just choose the log-level you want to allow (this can be changed later on).
After you done so, click next > to continue



That's it. Just hit the Finish button.



After the magic happened, Gnowsis is ready to take off. Click close to close the installation guide.

Step 3: First start

If you start Gnowsis, you'll reckognize that now you have a Gnowsis trayicon providing several options...



...and a Sidebar called Miniquire pops up with your name as an instance of Person. You are the first Thing in your PIMO.



Step 4: Configuration

Go to Tools>Configure to start the configuration process.



The Configuration dialog will pop up roviding several options...



...we start with Data Sources. Just click on the button.

Step 4.1: Add new Data Sources



You'll see that there are no Data Sources yet. So let's Add some. If you didn't get the hint, just click the Add button to continue.



Again several options are displayed. They depict the different types of  Data Sources. This installation instruction deals with all of them so it will describe them topdown.

Step 4.1.1: Configuring Local Address Books



At the moment Gnowsis provides support for Thunderbird, MS Outlook and KAddressbook. Just select  the adequate one, name it and hit Finish.
If you have trouble with this DataSource try pointing Gnowsis to the exact folder where the programm can be found.

Step 4.1.2: Configuring Microsoft Outlook



Fill out all the fields and hit Finish.

Step 4.1.3: Configuring a Webpage Data Source



Fill out all the fields and hit Finish.

Step 4.1.4: Configuring a Filesystem Data Source



Choose a name, a folder and the options you want to have and click Finish. That's it.

Step 4.1.5: Configuring Tagging Webistes



You can choose between Flickr, Del.icio.us and Bibsonomy and if you want to crawl tags, items or both.
Just fill out all the fields and hit Finish.

Step 4.1.6: Configuring an IMAP Data Source



Fill out all the fields and hit Finish.
Having done all (or at least some) of this, the Data Source Panel looks much better.



Thus we can go on to the next step.

Step 4.2: Configure the Data Source Crawler



If you want the crawler to automatically crawl your DataSources (recommended) just check the box and fill in an interval.

Step 5: Ready for take-off
