gnowsis
The Nepomuk project provides a standardized, conceptual framework for Semantic Desktops. Gnowsis is continued in the DFKI spin-off company gnowsis.com.
On a modern personal computer there are thousands of documents, emails, photos and music songs stored. Their number increases as we all download new files, send and receive emails, meet people. While we do all this, we use a multitude of different applications for our different goals. This is good, but in the future, it will be better.
Imagine that you can browse your files, friends, and photos like they were in a tiny little World Wide Web, using browsers and search engines. You can bookmark everything, link everything and enjoy surfing your data.
This can be done by taking all the pieces of information on your computer and see them a new way: the Semantic Web Way . Then everything turns into a Semantic Web resource and new possibilities arise.
Researchers from the Knowledge Management Lab at the DFKI did this. They took existing technology and approaches from the Semantic Web and used them on the data found on everyday computers. The result is known as a Semantic Desktop - a Desktop Computer enhanced with Semantic Desktop technologies.
The Gnowsis Semantic Desktop was funded by the research project EPOS and is continued as reference implementation of parts of the Nepomuk project.
